The Accidental Spiritual Experience

We took some time last week to visit the local groups participating in Muertos Fest as they set up their altars. This is San Antonio’s second year officially hosting an official Dia de los Muertos celebration. The festival was scheduled to start on Oct. 23 and we will be celebrating our son’s birthday, so I was a little disappointed we would miss the nighttime viewing but being there the night before was magical.
There was something so peaceful and healing to see the different families & groups coming together to set up the altars. It gave us a moment to share in that very personal moment that the artist has with his/her/their art. There were alters remembering the victims of domestic and dating violence, beautiful altars to Chadwick Boseman, and an amazing living altar to honor all those that we have lost to COVID-19.
In reflection, I realize that I was there at the right moment. The celebration of Dia de Los Muertos is wonderful but the truly beautiful part of this celebration is the reverence and devotion we experienced last night. Thank you so much for all the artisans that are putting their heart and souls into those altars.
Àsé!
